What is the meaning of Psalm 136? ›

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good: As in the previous psalm, Psalm 136 gives thanks and praise to God for His goodness. The fact that God is good is fundamental to all that He is and does. We know that God is love (1 John 4:8 and 4:16), and that love is an expression of His goodness.

Gracious God, As I reflect on Psalm 136, my heart overflows with gratitude for Your enduring love and faithfulness. I am reminded that Your love endures forever, and Your faithfulness continues through all generations. Thank You for Your steadfast presence in my life.

The Jerusalem Bible calls it a "Litany of Thanksgiving". It is notable for the refrain which forms the second half of each verse, translated as "For His mercy endures forever" in the New King James Version, or "for his steadfast love endures for ever" in the Revised Standard Version.

In Jewish tradition Psalm 136 is called the Great Hallel, a “great psalm of praise.” God's goodness, love, and power suffuse the psalm. In verses 1-9, His creator goodness is praised for His acts in the far, far past of creation… Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

In its opening lines, Psalm 136 refers to God as “LORD” (Yahweh), “God” (Elohim), and “Lord” (Adon). The first of these descriptions is the personal name of God. It suggests that he is eternal and faithful. The others – Elohim and Adon – are generic but appreciate the divinity and preeminence of God.

The Psalms tie our personal prayers to the corporate prayers of the people of Christ in every generation. They warm our hearts, inform our minds, and shape our wills. “The Psalms connect our personal walk with God to the corporate life of the whole church of Christ.”

Psalm 136, then, doesn't use repetition for repetition's sake. It uses it to make a thematic point. Because God's steadfast love endures forever, it reveals itself in all of His actions. Everything that God does, we can trace back to His enduring, steadfast love.
