it 5: a a NOTTINGHAM EVENING NEWS, MONDAY, JULY 10, 1961 Winfield Knocks Only 12-Then Out NORMAN HILL the HERO Notts Stride Towards Northants' 303 Total NORMAN HILL provided a tonic for Notts at Rushden, this afternoon! defying everything the Northants attackers, could dream up, he steadily sent up Notts' score to way over the 100 mark, and seemed well on the way to a century himself. At the other end Millman was content play second fiddle, which all added up to a sturdy second wicket partnership. Winfield had been out for 12 soon after Northants declared at 303 for two. At the start today Northamptonshire continued their innings of 226 for two with such careful batting in the early stages that Jim Watts and Lightfoot put on only 11 in the first half hour. Afterwards there was little scoring activity, and Lightfoot survived an lbw appeal from Corran, and later the same thing occurred when Forbes replaced Corran, CENTURY UP Lightfoot scored only a single in the first 30 minutes, then drove Forbes for two successive boundaries.
Watts reached his 100 in 195 minutes, when he took his 15th boundary, a cut for four. Jim Watts drove successive balls from Wells to the boundary and soon achieved his best score in first class cricket. Lightfoot passed 56 and the batsmen were then taking more readily off Wells and Forbes. When Northants. reached 303 for two.
Andrew declared. The stand between Watts and Lightfoot had put on 172 in 175 minutes, and Watts was unbeaten with 125, scored in four hours. His century included 19 boundaries. Lightfoot's 66 included eleven fours. Notts.

At 23. Notts. lost Winfield. who was caught at leg slip off Larter, As a result.
Hill and Millman batted more carefully for the remaining overs to lunch when Notts. had scored 28 for one. Hill, when 40. nearly gave a return catch to Allen, but otherwise both he and Millman found batting conditions easy. The second wicket stand reached 50 in an hour.
Northamptonshire's bowling had little encouragement. and Allen gave way to Scott. NORTHANTS. He emphasised today that he is the best left-hander in the world. He made his score with a tremendous homeward half of 31- 6iX below scratch finishing a glorious exhibition with a chip and five-foot putt to beat the record set by Syd Scott in the 1054 Open.
Clever chipping was a feature of his round. On nine occasions he approached sufficiently close to get down in a single putt! BIRDIE THREE He had a tenth single putt--of 25 feet--for a birdie three at the ninth, to reach the turn in 35. That long putt served as an inspiration. With fine pitched seconds and single putts he completed a hattrick of threes at the tenth and 11th and from that point to the end he was right on top. Charles turned professional because, he said, "there is a lot of money to be won these days." He raised a big laugh today when he added that he had previously worked in a bank on the receiving end for other people's money." Arnold Palmer, the American favourite to win had a round of 71 on the Hillside Course, finishing one behind Britain's Malcolm Hill and Harry Bradshaw (70).
The American was rated a five to two chance in a field of about 350 for the title and first prize of £1.400. He covered the first nine holes of the Hillside course in a two-below-scratch 34. Palmer covered the last nine holes in 37 for a round of 71. The American's worst hole was the 10th, where he sent his second shot into a deep bunker. The ball was in a footmark, and he moved only two feet into a similar position in the same hazard.
Christy O'Connor and Peter Alliss. two of Britain's chief hopes for recapturing the title after ten years, showed early good form at Birkdale. O'Connor equalled the scratch score with an outward 37. and Alliss. helped by a birdie three at the fifth was level fours for six holes.
He continued to play splendid golf and reached the turn in 35. NEAR DISASTER O'Connor went well for 15 holes, but then met near disaster. He pulled his second shot into bushes and lost it, finally holing out in seven, a round of 76 resulted. Birkdale amateur Ronnie White showed the way on his home course with a fine 72. His display, especially after finding his ball plugged six inches deep in the back of a bunker for a five at the 13th.
