What are the colors of the wires on a Honeywell valve? ›

The blue wire is the Neutral, N. The green/yellow wire is the Earth wire, E. The white wire is connected to the wire from the room thermostat which calls for heating (radiators or underfloor). The grey wire is used to drive the valve to the Water Off position, in which only the heating port A is open; it closes port B.

The yellow wires power the zone valve. Once the thermostat calls and the valve opens it closes an end switch (connected to the red leads) which calls in the aquastat relay.

Thermostat Wiring Tips

If your thermostat controls your heat, you will have a white wire. The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan. Rc and Rh: The red wire(s) are the power source for your thermostat.

The Blue or C Wire

C wires, whether blue or other color, may apply to every thermostat, but blue C wires are primarily used for thermostats that are attached to a heat pump. This wire connects to terminal B on your thermostat.

Typically, the yellow wires are for cooling, the green wire is for the fan, the orange wire is for heat pump systems, and the red wire is for power.

In a two wire system the leads you see usually come from a 24 volt transformer. The red wire is usually the hot side, it goes to the 'RH' terminal, the white goes to the 'W' terminal, NOT the 'C' terminal.

If the valve is installed backwards, the flow of water catches the closure ball, overrides the spring, the valve snaps shut, and the water slams to a halt.

See Table below. The protective ground is green or green with yellow stripe. The neutral is white, the hot (live or active) single phase wires are black , and red in the case of a second active. Three-phase lines are red, black, and blue.

The two yellow wires are controlled from the thermostat. The two red wires are the TT/boiler wires. If you have more than one zone valves then there should be multiple pairs of red wires. They all connect in parallel to each other.

If you have a mid position valve - the one that makes a T junction, one pipe goes to the hot water cylinder (marked B on the zone valve), and the other to the central heating (A). The pipe marked AB comes from your boiler, so it should be hot.

The extra white wire is another type of live: it acts as a signal or switch input for either the heating or hot water circuit, moves the motor round and turns the boiler or pump on. It's a little extra system safeguard so the boiler of pump don't run unnecessarily when there's nowhere for the water to flow to.
